Bloodshed, gunshots, looting and general unrest engulfed Bophuthatswana between the 7th and 12th of March in 1994. This was sparked by the announcement by Kgosi Lucas Mangope that the nominally independent Bantustan, created by the apartheid regime, would not participate in the general elections which were to be held in April. Civil servants, including police and military officers, students at the former Bophuthatswana University and members of the public took to the streets, rendering the capital, Mmabatho, ungovernable. Bophuthatswana Broadcasting Corporation staff would later join the strike, causing more panic for the authorities. For more news, visit sabcnews.com and #SABCNews on all Social Media platforms.
