The further you walk along the promenade, the deeper the "unique silence of Uji" woven by the water, wind, and light becomes, slowly soothing the traveler's soul. Eventually, the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple comes into view. The Amida Hall, built by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052, is a masterpiece of Japanese architecture, a replica of the palace where Amida Buddha leads visitors to the Pure Land.
