After last week’s video, I realized there’s a myth we need to address: “People have shorter attention spans now.” News flash - they don’t. Not students. Not employees. Not anyone. As a former teacher and now a corporate ID, I’ve seen that what looks like shrinking attention spans is really the result of: ➡ Heavy workloads ➡ Constant notifications ➡ Competing priorities ➡ Rushed timelines ➡ Administrative or stakeholder pressures These factors pull attention away from learning but don't inherently mean that people have lost the ability to focus. In schools, teachers compete with phones, strict pacing calendars, and endless requirements. In corporate, IDs compete with meetings, emails, deadlines, and the pressure to deliver “quick” content. So yes, learners get distracted, but that’s just because of their environment. When people have clear expectations, time, relevance, and the right format for the content, then they absolutely engage deeply. The problem isn’t attention spans, it’s alignment. So, how about we stop blaming learners and start designing with their reality in mind. #instructionaldesign #learninganddevelopment #corporatetraining #education #attentionspan
