#Route66 #Seligman #Arizona In episode 2 of our "Route 66 Legacy" Documentary series, we start out at the famous Roadkill Cafe / O.K. Saloon and hear the story of how it came to be, along with a few other businesses in the family located on Historic Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona. We then ride down the road to go check out some of the other local attractions in the area, hearing stories from everyone along the way. We've rode through numerous towns like this on our motorcycle road trip across Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago, and are now returning to each town, one by one, to explore the deep history throughout. The town site was on Beale's Wagon Road, and a stage stop on the Mojave Road Originally, Seligman was called "Prescott Junction" because it was the railroad stop on the Santa Fe mainline junction with the Prescott and Arizona Central Railway Company feeder line running to Prescott, in the Arizona Territory. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) had reached it in 1882. In 1886 it was renamed Seligman, after Jesse Seligman, one of the founders of J. & W. Seligman & Co. of New York, who helped finance the railroad lines in the area. Route 66 reduced the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles by more than 200 miles, which made Route 66 popular among thousands of motorists who drove west in subsequent decades. Like other highways of its day, Route 66 reflects the origin and evolution of road transportation in the United States. Not only does Route 66 underscore the importance of the automobile as a technological achievement, but, perhaps equally important to the American psyche, it symbolized unprecedented freedom and mobility for every citizen who could afford to own and operate a car. In response the federal government pledged to link small town USA with all of the metropolitan capitals. The period of historical significance for Route 66 is 1926 to 1985. The national system of public highways brought geographic cohesion and economic prosperity to the disparate regions of the country.
