In this episode, we head out to pick up a BMW E34 donor car—purchased as a non-runner and intended primarily for subframe use in our ongoing BMW E24 project. The goal was simple: don’t waste good parts from the E34 and get the engine atleast running. Before tearing the car down, we wanted to verify whether the engine was actually healthy. Instead of scrapping or guessing, we walked through the proper process—compression testing, diagnosing the no-start condition, and methodically bringing the engine back to life to understand exactly what was wrong. After checking compression and replacing the airflow meter (MAF) and idle air control valve (IAC), the engine started and ran surprisingly well. Strong compression and smooth operation confirmed that this was a good engine—one worth keeping, storing, or eventually selling rather than throwing away. This episode focuses on: Buying a BMW E34 non-runner the smart way Diagnosing and reviving an engine purely for evaluation Showing how we approach no-start issues in a real shop Why verifying engine health matters, even when it’s not part of the build Removing and preparing the E34 subframe for use in our E24 project Making proper decisions with donor cars instead of wasting usable parts While our long-term build centers around the BMW E24, this episode leans heavily into the E34—its condition, its drivetrain health, and why these cars are becoming increasingly valuable in the classic BMW world. Real shop life also plays a role here. Between customer cars and daily operations, progress on the E24 had to pause temporarily. We’ll be continuing the modification work in the next episode. If you’re into: BMW E34s and E24s Classic BMWs and old-school European cars Real restomod projects done in a working shop Saving good parts instead of scrapping them This is for you. No TV drama. No shortcuts. Just real work, real decisions, and real builds.
