We begin this morning as South Korea braces for a typhoon that is potentially the strongest ever to hit the peninsula.... Typhoon Hinnamnor. The country is already seeing some effects of the typhoon with heavy downpours nationwide. But, the island of Jeju will be the first part of the country to see the direct impact of Hinnamnor... as it is approaching the country's southernmost island at 22 kilometers per hour. For more on this our Lee Rae-hyun is on the line with us. Rae-hyun, what's the latest? Right, Do-yeon... Jeju's Regional Office of Meteorology issued a typhoon advisory as of 8 AM on Monday. The warning applies to both offshore and inland regions of Jeju Island. Typhoon Hinnamnor is currently moving northward in the south-southwest sea off Jeju's Seogwipo City. The Korea Meteorological Administration has forecast that the typhoon will hit southern offshore Gyeongsangnam-do province on Tuesday morning. Experts also expect the typhoon to directly impact the city of Busan too... with a maximum speed of up to 43 meters per second... making it the strongest typhoon to hit South Korea. The typhoon is already causing heavy rainfall here in South Korea... with the southwestern areas of Jeju Island recording 150 millimeters of rain as of Sunday at 6 PM. Forecasters predict six-hundred millimeters of rain for mountainous parts of Jeju,... while nationwide, they are expecting be one to three hundred millimeters by Tuesday. So far at least 6 people have been rescued from flooding on the island. Strong winds, too, are already affecting all parts of Jeju Island right now, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of around 29-point-1 meters per second recorded on Hallasan Mountain as of 4 AM. Right,... Reports say Typhoon Hinnamnor is set to be the strongest storm in the nation's history. How is the South Korean government bracing for this situation? You're right, Doyeon, Typhoon Hinnamnor is threatening catastrophic damage for South Korea... as according to the Korea Meteorological Administration the country has never encountered a typhoon of this strength or level of atmospheric pressure before. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters issued its highest alert as of Sunday at 4:30 PM. Authorities have advised companies to adjust commuting hours for staff and schools to temporarily close or switch to online classes on Tuesday, when the direct impact of the typhoon is expected to be felt. Most flights going in and out of Jeju island have been canceled,... while all public hiking trails in South Korea have been closed to the public. Around 200 people living in areas most at risk from flooding in the city of Busan have been evacuated. So far there gave been no casualties reported.
