HOW TO INCORPORATE SAINT JOSEPH INTO YOUR DEVOTIONAL PRAYER WITH FR. EDWARD LOONEY The devotional life of the Catholic Church leads us to deeper meditation on the mysteries of Christ, believes Fr. Edward Looney. Is there a way to connect St. Joseph to the Stations of the Cross or the Rosary? Fr. Looney teaches us how to incorporate St. Joseph as part of our devotional meditation. Outline: Fr. Looney walks us through several of the Stations of the Cross and the mysteries of the Rosary, showing us how he has found St. Joseph’s presence in that form of prayer. When Jesus is condemned to die, it leads us to recall His initial condemnation by Herod who sought Jesus’s life. As Jesus picks up His cross it is an invitation to think about the wood Jesus would have used in the carpenter’s shop. As He falls, we can think of the falls Jesus had as a child and how St. Joseph swooped in to assist. In the meeting of Mary along the way, we can consider the absence of St. Joseph. The assistance of Simon of Cyrene calls us to think of how so many strangers helped the Holy Family as they fled into Egypt. As one prays the Rosary, it is quite easy to find connections for the Joyful Mysteries since Joseph has a presence in each. As Mary receives her annunciation, so too does Joseph in a dream. Joseph most likely accompanied Mary to Ein Karem, or at least the famous artists of history depict it as such. Think of Joseph’s presence in the cave at Bethlehem and what it was like for him to behold the face of God. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River and the friendship of John the Baptist and connection of the Holy Family with Zechariah and Elizabeth. The Wedding Feast of Cana leads us to call to mind the betrothal and marriage of Joseph and Mary. The Eucharist celebration helps us to recall Joseph as a leader of Passover prayer. The Glorious Mysteries are rich with Jesus’s descent into hell and bringing Joseph into paradise. The Ascension of Jesus is Jesus being with the Heavenly Father and His earthly father. The Assumption of Mary is a family reunion and Mary’s coronation, I’d like to imagine St. Joseph participating in that action. In the concluding minutes of the presentation, I share about personal intercessory prayer with St. Joseph, imaginative prayer and modifying some of the traditional prayers to include St. Joseph. May St. Joseph enrich your devotional life.
