You can use a thin sheet of metal to widen the gap between the tines on a fountain pen nib and improve the flow, if the problem is narrow tines. Disclaimer: this video shows the technique I use to fix dry fountain pen nibs. Using this technique improperly may damage the nib beyond repair, and may void the warranty on your fountain pen. I am not liable for any damages arising from your decision to use this technique on your pen nib, as the decision to modify your fountain pen lies with you, and you take responsibility for that decision. There may be other reasons why the pen writes dry, so you need to exclude these first. Make sure you saturate the feed with ink (fill the fountain pen and use the converter to push ink into the feed. You’ll know when the feed is saturated because ink will peek out of the filling hole, or it will overflow!). Alternatively, you can dip the pen into ink which will ensure there is a small ink reserve on the nib and distal end of the feed. If the pen doesn’t express ink with soft pressure, or makes a very inconsistent faint line, but then with hard pressure (which naturally widens the tines) you see that there is better ink flow, then you can confidently say the problem is narrow tines. I then use a stepwise “escalating” process of widening the tines and testing before escalating. You do not want to widen the tines too much because that may also stop the nib from expressing ink. 1. Press the pen nib onto paper on a hard surface to open the tines. 2. Insert the thin metal sheet. 3. Push the metal sheet until it reaches the end of the feed. 4. Take out the metal sheet. 5. Test the pen. If the pen is still dry… Repeat 1-3 4. Slide the metal sheet down the length, then take it out. 5. Test the pen. If the pen is still dry… Repeat 1-3 4. Wiggle the metal sheet side to side 5 or so times, approximately 5-10 degrees off the midline. 5. Test the pen. Most dry nibs will be fixed with just a slight widening by putting the metal sheet in and taking it out. The nib in this video is particularly stiff and needed extra work to get it writing with good ink flow.
