Is on-site power generation the answer for trucking fleets struggling to electrify? With our power grid already strained, fleets looking to electrify may not be able to do so, or may face decade-long waits for the electricity they need. However, Hyliion thinks its Karno Power Module could offer a solution: power generation right where it’s needed. The Karno is a 200-kilowatt, fuel-agnostic linear heat generator built on Stirling engine principles. The Stirling engine was first invented in 1816, but Hyliion has put a modern twist on this old and established technology. Unlike diesel generators, the Karno does not require oil changes and avoids costly aftertreatment systems while still achieving drastically lower emissions. It can run on over 20 fuels, from natural gas to hydrogen, and even use rare ones like dimethyl ether (DME). One of the biggest questions fleet operators may have about the Karno would be: is generating my own electricity cheaper than buying it from my utility? Hyliion says that in most cases, generating electricity with the Karno is cheaper, especially when you’re avoiding peak demand costs utilities impose. The company is also working on a larger two-megawatt version of the Karno in order to meet larger power needs. But, is this just a concept, or is it actually being used today? The U.S. Navy has invested millions of dollars into the Karno to potentially use it for future autonomous vessels. And, Hyliion is making delivery of the Karno to some early adopter fleets that consist of Fortune 200 companies. Would you use the Karno to electrify your fleet? Let us know in the comments below.
