Preparation of Vanadyl acetylacetonate

To 10 ml of distilled water in a 100 ml beaker slowly add 5 ml of conc. H2SO4, with stirring. Carefully add 12 ml of ethanol and 2.5 g of V2O5. Heat the reaction mixture over asbestos plate for 1.5 h during which time the solution will turn dark blue-green. Cool the reaction mixture to room temperature and filter through glass wool. Add acetylacetone (6 ml) to the filtrate drop-wise with shaking. Once all of the acetylacetone has been added to the solution, neutralize carefully by adding it to a stirred solution of 20 g of anhydrous sodium carbonate in 150 ml of distilled water. Cool the resulting mixture in an ice bath for 15 min and then filter. Wash the dark green solid product twice with 15 ml portions of ice cold distilled water and dry on filter. Report Yield.
