OBITUARY Rev. Willas Charles Makunike, Former SaMakunike D.O.B: 09 February 1928 D.O.D: 04 September 2021 Rev. Willas Makunike was born on 9 February 1928. Before answering the call to ordained ministry, he served diligently in several professions. He worked as a police officer, a builder, and later as a teacher. His passion for education saw him teaching at Nyamukwarara Primary School and Nyakatsapa Primary School, where he positively influenced many young lives. During his time in the teaching profession, he met Emilia Musidzarira of Dangare, who was also a teacher at Buwu Primary School. Their friendship blossomed into love, and they were united in holy matrimony on 23 February 1952. Their marriage was blessed with eight children—four of whom have since passed on and four who survive him. He was also blessed with 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. His legacy continues through this growing family. In 1966, at the age of 38, Rev. Makunike answered God’s call to ministry in the then Rhodesia Annual Conference. That same year, he was ordained as a Deacon, and in 1968 he was ordained as an Elder. His faithful service in ministry spanned many years and circuits: 1966–1970: Mundenda/Penhalonga/Odzi Circuit 1971–1976: Nyakatsapa Circuit 1977–1980: District Superintendent (DS), Mutasa/Makoni District 1981–1986: Midlands Circuit 1987–1992: Chitungwiza Circuit 1993: Gandanzara Circuit He officially retired in 1994 at the age of 66. However, his passion for ministry did not end there. He was recalled to service: 1995–1996: Nyakatsapa Circuit (Schools Chaplain and Station Chairman) 1997–1998: Zimunya North Circuit 1999–2001: Zimunya Central Circuit (Munyarari) 2002: Dangamvura–Nyakatsapa (at the age of 74) Rev. Makunike was a devoted servant of God, a committed family man, and a respected leader in the church and community. His life was marked by dedication, humility, and unwavering faith. He shepherded many congregations, nurtured spiritual growth, and mentored countless individuals throughout his ministry. His legacy of service, integrity, and faithfulness will continue to inspire generations to come. ISU SEMHURI TINOTENDA NEBASA GURI IRO MAKAIITA “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)
