The Old Royal Court in Bucharest (1458-1738) The Old Royal Court in Bucharest was initially a fortress built by Mircea the Elder, around 1386. Later in 1458-1459, Vlad Tepes rebuilt the fortress, consolidated it and declared it as a royal residence, an alternative to the one in Targoviste. It served as a royal residence as a political and administrative center and as a defensive fortification against the Ottoman threat. The construction of the fortress was made of brick and stone, with thick walls, a defensive moat and towers along the entire perimeter of the fortress. The fortress had two diametrically opposed gates in the southeast and southwest. Inside the fortification was the royal palace, the Old Court Church, today called the Saint Anthony Church (the oldest place of worship in Bucharest, 1558-1559), the stables, the gardens, a bathhouse and the administrative staff's residences. Over the years, the fortress or royal court was expanded and modernized by several rulers: Radu cel Frumos, Vlad the Monk, Mircea Ciobanul, Matei Basarab, Grigore Ghica, Gheorghe Duca, Șerban Cantacuzino, Constantin Brancoveanu. During the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu (1688-1714), the Old Court had its most flourishing period. During this period, Bucharest developed greatly with the Old Court as its center, thus becoming the only capital of Wallachia as the political and administrative center. The surface area of the palace and gardens reached 25,000 square meters, in a perimeter delimited today, to the south, by the Dâmboviţa River, to the west by Smârdan and Şelari streets, to the north by the Lipscani commercial artery, and to the east by I.C. Brătianu Boulevard. The fortress was seriously affected by the fire of 1718 and the earthquake of 1738, the year in which it ceased its activity as a residence. During the Phanariot reign, a new princely residence was built on Spirii Hill, called Curtea Noua. **Please SUBSCRIBE to get updates on new videos!** / @mihai_manea_dacian_history3d Alte reconstructii in 3D ale cetatilor dacice: / @mihai_manea_dacian_history3d • Istorii ascunse: Cetăţile dacice din Munți...
