Depth of Field 2020-21: The Politics of Publishing

In 2019-20, we invited a range of guests with the aim of unsettling and excavating how we practice, think and learn about graphic communication design. The events of 2020 have both intensified and lent focus to this ambition. This year’s lecture series will consider questions of the most urgent relevance to the education and industry of graphic communication design, placing them into social, environmental and historical contexts. Marking the launch of CSM’s new Publications Workshop, the second lecture of our series will introduce Danielle Aubert, Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Wayne State University, and Rathna Ramanathan, Dean of the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art. Sharing examples of their own practice, Danielle and Rathna will discuss the relationship between publishing and politics, and in doing so, draw out the contemporary relevance and impact of graphic communication design practices on political environments. Danielle and Rathna will each speak for 15 minutes. This will be followed by a moderated discussion with the opportunity for the audience to contribute questions.
