Story of me building my jeep in Panama. It was technically an M151, replacing the old Willy's jeep from WWII for service in the Vietnam War. The video tells the basic story of the jeep, but there's more. The shed my dad helped me build to cover the construction of the jeep has a story too. The upright galvanized steel pipes came from an old staircase out in the jungle my dad knew about. He sent me into the bush with a set of pipe cutters and told me to cut four sections of the railings and bring them home. So, I did. I dug four holes, mixed some concrete, and then we put them in the holes. He did not use a level. He eye-balled each one against the side of the cinder-block government house we lived in and let them dry. Then he put the level on them. They were all perfect. I guess he just wanted to show his son how cool he was. I knew he was cool. He could spot deer on the face of the open rock face of Sosa Hill almost a mile away that we couldn't even see without his direction. He would also memorize the names of ships coming into harbor before he left work and then pretend he could see them way out in the bay as he named them when he got home. We'd finally get to read the names when they came under the bridge near the house... only to confirm he was right. It took us years to figure that one out. Back to the shed: Cos (Cosman Price; the old fisherman from down at the ferry who kept his gear at our house) came up before the posts had dried and shook one in front of my dad to "test" it. Of course, that screwed that particular pipe all to hell and dad made Cos dig it up and replace it. Cos didn't "inspect" our work much after that.
