I was asked about the frames I place my fabric on when I hand paint. Making an inexpensive custom frame to stretch cotton fabric on for hand painting is easy. When fabric is set on a surface for painting it may end up with unwanted marks or bubbles. Sometimes that is okay but when I want more control over the finished fabric I use a frame. This size frame yields a usable piece of fabric that is 18" by 44" and I use the leftover selvage, that may not be completely painted and have may "teeth" holes, for other fiber artwork. Though the frame could be made any size I would recommend no larger than 4 feet by 3 feet. Materials for making this frame are: 3/4" x 1 1/2" pine lumber cut two pieces 18" and two pieces 45 3/8" (I bought three 48" pieces). Picture hangers (I used 50 but fewer may be used). Small brads or nails with heads Hammer (I used a tack hammer) The bolt from a toggle bolt set 8 drywall screws Hand drill, drill bit a little smaller in diameter than the screw, and a screw driver bit Small needle nose pliers (optional, may help hold the brad when hammering) Wood glue (optional) Pencil A wine or champagne bottle cork I have several of these frames so I can paint and set them out to dry. When the first one is dry I quickly pull the fabric off and put a new piece on... on a sunny day I can just keep painting, pop the dry fabric off and start again.
