Suddenly homeowners, that's something Hannah (33) and Markus (40) never dreamed possible. "Sometimes I still can't believe that it really is our house," says Hannah, beaming from ear to ear. They had noticed the large, imposing brick building at the entrance to the small village of Schönborn in Hunsrück for some time. But until recently, it was inconceivable to both of them that it would one day belong to them. The first time they visited the building, they were disillusioned: the 140-year-old village school was almost suffocating in garbage. Banana boxes full of stuff, building materials, rubble and inventory from an eventful history piled up. The experts advised against it, but Hannah and Markus took the plunge. For the past year, the two have been renovating the old building step by step: tearing it down, gutting it and carefully rebuilding it. "It is important to us to reuse as much as possible - out of respect for the old building but also for reasons of sustainability," Hannah explains. "We use ecologically compatible building materials and work with clay plaster and wall heating, for example, to modernize the house as efficiently and sustainably as possible," Markus explains. Both come from the Hunsrück region, have traveled a lot in Germany and the world on business, and are happy to create a new home for themselves with the old village school. Markus, who comes from neighboring Simmern, finds his surroundings and the people in the village very important: "Here you have the freedom and the opportunity to create something." Whether it's help with crafts or quick routes and contacts - in the village, people know each other, help each other and appreciate what goes on there. "In the village, you're never alone!" "We never doubted that we could do it together," they both say with conviction. While they haven't been a couple for very long, the shared challenge welds them together. "You grow from something like this," Hannah explains with a laugh. Sure, you sometimes discover a quirk, but you also discover a lot of surprising talents in your partner. And they will be put to good use in the coming months, because there is still a lot to do on the construction site. Since they both work full time and do a lot of the finishing work themselves, it will be a while before they can move in. In any case, the anticipation is already high. 00:00 Village people: Hannah & Marcus 01:01 We buy a house 02:45 The village helps 04:45 Room Tour 05:46 Support from family and friends 08:40 Forever in the village? 11:25 A house with history 13:45 A building site: From making and learning 17:52 What does it do to us as a couple?
