Inflammatory Bowel Disease: The Surgeon's Role in Multidisciplinary Management Description: Exacerbations and complications related to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are common consultations that surgeons are asked to give input on. Often, either acute surgical intervention is required, but more often medical management is employed. Surgeons' involvement in the care of these patients ceases at this point until the next "crisis" arises. This panel will discuss the acute management of patients with IBD and what surgical procedures should be used to treat these patients. If staged surgery is required, how to optimize the initial surgery to assist in further surgery will also be discussed. Presentations will address the widening portfolio of medical management in treating IBD patients and how to use these medications postoperatively. Longitudinal involvement by the surgeon will also be emphasized, similar to how surgeons remain involved in the care of colorectal cancer and other cancer patients long term
