All White People are Inherently Racist and Oppressive: Lessons from Counselor Training

In this conversation Gabrielle and I go through the book used in our counselor training programs to develop "cultural competency." We focus on the way counselors are being taught about "whiteness," "white identity formation," and how and what "white" people think in America. I hope you all find this as shocking as I did and still do. Near the end I read a couple of my own brief essays from the course I took in which this book was taught, along with my professor's responses, so that you can see a concrete example of how pushback is treated in these racialized programs. Gabrielle Turner is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) practicing in the Austin, Texas area where she lives with her husband and three cats. She is a 2022 graduate of Texas State University's Professional Counseling Program. Starting her graduate program after raising three sons into their teens, she was prepared to see the infiltration of social justice and other left-leaning ideologies that has characterized higher education in the decades since she completed her undergraduate work. Even so, she was surprised at the level of social justice indoctrination present in the curriculum and especially in the students populating the program.
