The Abia State Government and ASTOPU (Abia State Tricycle Operators Union) have assured that the newly introduced electric shuttle buses will not displace "Keke" (tricycle) operators. Instead, they will complement existing transport services, with the government focusing on protecting, rather than replacing, the livelihood of tricycle operators, especially in Aba. Key details regarding the transport transition: Complementary Role: Electric buses, launched in December 2025, are designed to improve public transportation and reduce pollution, not drive out Keke operators. Protection of Livelihood: Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, assured during the 2025 ASTOPU reward ceremony that the government would protect tricycle operators, who are considered vital to the state's transportation ecosystem. Recognition of Operators: The 2025 ASTOPU ceremony honored 164 operators for their honesty in returning items forgotten by passengers, highlighting the union's integrity and value to the state. Support for Union: ASTOPU leadership is encouraged to maintain strong, visionary management, while operators are urged to prioritize safety. The initiative aims to modernize public transport in Abia State while ensuring that existing transportation methods like Kekes continue to function.
