Best Electric Riding Mower? RYOBI RM480e Review

Been using this Ryobi riding mower for about six months. A kind of pricey mower here in the EU compared to the US. But overall I think it was worth it as Im charging it with solar basically for free. If its worth it in the long run is up to the batteries. Was thinking of getting an electric Husqvarna riding mower but it was discontinued for some reason. So I went with the Ryobi instead and it performs very well, except for the annoying squeaks in the steering. The RM480e is an excellent choice if you have a bigger lawn and smooth ground. Ryobi also sell a bigger zero turn mower but the RM480e fits my needs better with lots of tight spots and uneven ground in our garden, it also takes up less space in the garage than Ryobi's bigger model would. PROS Zero emissions, no gas fumes. Less maintenance compared to gas mowers. Dry clean with blower and cloth, remove and scrape the deck once in a while, replace or resharpen the blades yearly if you abuse them like I do. Lead batteries might need a clean at the connectors once in a while as well. Runtime is about 1-3 hours depending on grass type and intensity. Speedy, gaspedal is pretty torquey, just gotta get used to it. No problem with breaks or parking break so far. It's fun to ride, you can hear light buzzing-woozing sound without the blades active and I like that. Good turning radius. LED headlights is nice, not the brightest but very practical, Ryobi should include backup lights as well. Cruise control is awesome to have on a riding mower. USB-A to charge phone while in a tray. I use the USB with some cheap LED-lights while in reverse in the dark shed. Can holder, cant complain about that. Tires works great on our lawn and even on bumpy fields and steep hills. Ryobi says no hills above 15%, probably for safety reasons. I went far beyond that, our lawn gotta be one of the most overgrown, uneven and hilly place on earth. I wouldnt recommend doin this at home tho. Got a few small fields with meter high growth that gets cut once or twice every year and it was no problem for the RM480e, as long as you cruise slow, and clean around the motors where a lot of grass or leaves sneaks in. Please note that this mower isn't really ment for this type of use but it worked for me.We'll see how long the motors last in the long run. Seat is comfy enough and adjustable forwards and backwards. On bumpy ground however it is backbreaking if you go fast. Put it on creep cruise and its no problem. Towing limit is 100 kilos max according to the manual. So for a homeowner its also useful as a garden tractor with a small cart for grass, leaves, dirt, firewood etc. Looks different than other mowers, neighbors stop ask like "what da heck is that go-kart thing?". CONS Steering is seriously squeaky at the front of the mower. I use a pair of Sony noice cancelling headphones when mowing but I can still hear it. Not sure why Ryobi overlooked this. It sounded just like in the video on delivery. Lead batteries in this model is seriously heavy. Wish it had easily removable Lion batteries like some other ev mower brands has. On the plus side lead is cheaper, and can also be sold used to junkyards/recycling at the current price of lead, don't throw them away! With all these batteries it's a pretty good resale value to then buy a new set of batteries. Could have been USB-C as well, but you probably have a lot of old USB-A cables anyway. Arm rest would have been nice at the seat and a little better suspension/comfort wouldn't hurt either. The grass cover, or whatever it's called, have no way to be locked standing upwards in maintenance mode. I use the two thick plastic straps included with packaging to hold it up during maintenance, parking or mowing in tight spots with the mulch cover on. Price was pretty high. Be aware that it ships on a big metal pallet that you have to disassemble, and then mount the steering wheel and seat on the mower before you drive it off the pallet. Hopefully this thing doesn't need much service, but if it does it is probably not as easy to find a Ryobi service joint, as lets say with Husqvarna who has got dealers all over the place.
