Highlighting the growth habit of bougainvilleas! My hobby is to shape my bougainvilleas into bonsai trees. I grow my bougainvilleas during the growing season for their blooms; in Houston, Texas (zone 9a) that could be 9-12 months out of the year! Every spring I reshape each bougainvillea and set a structure or outline of the main branches I want to develop that season. I focus on a handful of branch’s when deciding what to keep or clip. Then I let the bougainvillea grow until it develops and drops its colorful bracts. Once the bracts drop I’ll maintain the general shape by trimming, no more hard pruning until next spring.
