1861 — a year of conflict and transformation. The Civil War begins in America, while writers, thinkers, and rulers in Europe and beyond shape the modern world. Through authentic colourised photographs, we see Lincoln’s inauguration, the bombardment of Fort Sumter, the first ironclads and telegraph wagons, and figures such as Karl Marx, Richard Wagner, Charles Baudelaire, and Victor Emmanuel. Each image in this series is believed to have been taken in — or directly tied to — the featured year. Some records from the 19th century are incomplete, and we apologise for any errors or uncertainties. Highlights from 1861: Abraham Lincoln inaugurated as 16th U.S. President. Fort Sumter bombardment sparks the Civil War. Union innovation: telegraph wagons in the field. USS Cincinnati — among the first Union ironclads. Karl Marx, Richard Wagner, Charles Baudelaire — reshaping culture and politics in Europe. Victor Emmanuel — leading Italian unification. Indigenous leaders Baptiste and the Salmon Chief of Schweillp, Pacific Northwest. John Wilkes Booth — years before he assassinated Lincoln. Timestamps: 00:00 George A.
