This was...a lot...of work. Between last week and this week it took us six days of heavy hand tooling to turn the rough ground of the hoop-house into usable garden space. The kids learned how to use a spade, how to use a spading fork, and how to use a hoe. We finished right up against the end of when you can plant a fall crop, but the hoop-house will help us resist the first few frosts. Hopefully we don't get an early freeze though. Because so much work needed done so quickly students from the community would come during their study blocks to help out, so a big thanks to everyone who came to make this possible. This is the second phase of restoring the school hoop-house to a functional growing space. It has been years since it has been used or maintained and one of my goals in the first year of my agricultural science program is to return it to production status through an educational journey with my students! This is not all we'll be doing though. Across the school's 350 acre organic farm there are many great resources that require restoration and maintenance. These are the long term goals for the program, but they will take years to accomplish, some longer than others. Throughout this year you will see us set and accomplish short term tasks working towards these long term goals, always planning for where it will put us in the future. Come along on our great learning adventure!
