Soil is alive! Understanding its biology can help farmers make better management decisions. Dr. Deb Neher, soil ecologist and Associate Director of the Soil Health Research and Extension Center (SHREC) at the University of Vermont, shares insights on the science of soil biology and its connection to farm management. In this presentation for agricultural service providers, Dr. Neher introduces SHREC’s new soil health testing services, discusses biological indicators of soil health, and the latest science on measuring soil biology responses to management. Launched in April 2025, the UVM Soil Health Research and Extension Center (SHREC) was created to fill a critical gap in soil science—measuring biological activity and developing tests that reflect the outcomes of agricultural management. Its current focus is on Vermont-based sampling, serving primarily farmers as well as researchers. Learn more below: SHREC Fact Sheet: https://www.uvm.edu/d10-files/documen...
