Pesce di piccole dimensioni che raggiunge massimo 4 cm, in natura presenta una livrea color grigio verde ma sono state selezionate in Giappone fin dal 1600 alcune varietà ornamentali colorate, quella più antica è la gold e le più famose sono: Oryzias Latipes, Oryzias Mekongensis, Oryzias Melastigma, Oryzias Dancena, Oryzias Woworae, Oryzias Javanicus, Oryzias Melastigmus, Oryzias Minutillus, Oryzias Curvinotus. E' un pesce che vive in branchi, molto pacifico e può convivere con altri pesci della stessa specie e simili come Gambusia affinis, sconsigliati grandi predatori, possiamo allevarlo in mini-pond, laghetti o acquari di piccole dimensioni. Il dimorfismo sessuale non è molto accentuato ma esistono alcune differenze; la femmina presenta la pinna anale più ridotta e di forma triangolare nel maschio invece si presenta più lunga con raggi che arrivano a sfiorare la coda, inoltre le femmine viste dall alto presentano un ventre più gonfio e rotondo. Sono pesci ovipari, la femmina porta le uova attaccate all esterno del ventre e vengono fecondate dal maschio. Il Medaka è un micro predatore che si nutre di tutti gli altri organismi che sono a portata della loro bocca, quindi sarà opportuno fornire larve di zanzara, Artemie saline, e anche cibo secco a base animale ovviamente sminuzzato.
