Atoms Lab: What is a Rainbow?

Atom's Lab: The Magical World of Light Introduction Welcome to Atom's Lab, where we explore the wonders of science! Today, we're diving into the magical world of light. Light is all around us, but it's more than just what we see. In this video, we'll learn about the different colors of light, how rainbows are formed, and even invisible light. The Colors of Light Have you ever seen a rainbow? Rainbows are one of the most beautiful natural phenomena, and they're created by light. But what colors make up a rainbow? There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. These colors are the ones that we can see with our eyes. How Rainbows Are Formed Rainbows are formed when sunlight hits water droplets in the air. The light is refracted (bent) and reflected back to our eyes, creating a rainbow of colors. Isaac Newton and the Discovery of White Light In the 17th century, a scientist named Isaac Newton was curious about how light worked. He conducted a series of experiments with prisms, which are special pieces of glass that can separate light into its component colors. Newton discovered that white light is actually made up of all the colors of the rainbow. He also discovered that when white light passes through a prism, it is refracted at different angles depending on the color. This is why rainbows form. Infrared Light In the late 18th century, a scientist named William Herschel was curious about the temperature of different colors of light. He used a prism to separate white light into its component colors, and then he used a thermometer to measure the temperature of each color. Herschel discovered that there is a type of light that is beyond the red end of the visible light spectrum. This type of light is called infrared light. Infrared light is invisible to the human eye, but we can feel it as heat. Infrared Light in Everyday Life Infrared light is used in many different things in our everyday lives. For example, infrared lights are used in remote controls to transmit signals to our TVs and other devices. Infrared lights are also used in night vision goggles to allow us to see in the dark. Conclusion Light is a fascinating and mysterious thing. It's all around us, but we often take it for granted. In this video, we learned about the different colors of light, how rainbows are formed, and even invisible light. We also learned about the important discoveries of Isaac Newton and William Herschel. These scientists were curious about how light worked, and their discoveries have helped us to understand the world around us better. Thank you for joining me in Atom's Lab! I hope you learned something new about the magical world of light.
