Today, we're just going to give you some useful tips on the Speaking section of the TOEFL. That's the section students worry about the most, but we'll show you how to do as well as you can! There are six questions on the Speaking section. In this video, we'll talk about the first question on the speaking section: question one. The actual question that you'll be asked on question one will vary, but in general this question will ask you to describe something familiar to you. It might ask you about a person, or a place, or an activity. Generally, it will be something you can describe based on your personal experiences. Let's look at some examples. Here's one question that you might get on the Speaking section: Talk about one of your favorite places to visit. Explain what you like about visiting that place. Include specific reasons and examples in your response. Here is another example: Most people are positively influenced by other people in their lives. Select one person and explain how that person has had a positive influence on you. Give specific details and examples to explain your answer. OK, how do we answer a question like that? Let's take it step-by-step. First, let's think about time. We'll have 15 seconds to prepare our response, and 45 seconds to actually give our response. 15 seconds isn't that much time, so we just want to use this time to choose our answer and think of two reasons for it. Don't worry too much about thinking of the perfect answer. Just choose one that you can defend. For example, let's say you are answering the question about who most influenced you. Maybe you immediately think of your piano teacher. Now just think of a couple of ways she influenced you: she taught you piano, and she also taught you the importance of hard work. That's all you need for an excellent answer! Now you have 45 seconds to give your response. Use your first 15 seconds to introduce your answer, like this: [Read this at a conversational pace; text will be displayed to your right] Many people have had a positive influence on my life, but my piano teacher is the one that I would like to talk about. The skills that she has taught me are ones that I use every day. Without her influence, I think I would not be the person who I am today. That's perfect. Now, we can use our next 15 seconds to develop our first reason for our answer, like this: [Read this at a conversational pace; text will be displayed to your right] First of all, of course, my piano teacher is the person who taught me how to play the piano. Since I hope to be a professional pianist, that's one of the most important skills in my life. I would not play nearly as well as I do now without her guidance. Finally, we can use our last 15 seconds to give our second reason for our answer. Something like this: [Read this at a conversational pace; text will be displayed to your right] More importantly, my piano teacher has taught me the importance of hard work. I used to be terrible at the piano, and now I'm almost a professional. But that came from years of hard work. The importance of working hard for your goals is the most important thing I learned from my teacher. That's a really good answer to the question. Remember, our answer doesn't have to be perfect. If our answer is clear and well-structured, we can get a great score. Let's review. Question One on the Speaking section will ask us about something familiar in our lives. So we should just choose an answer that we're comfortable talking about, and give two reasons for our answer. As with all speaking questions, we shouldn't worry too much about giving a "perfect" answer. Instead we should speak as confidently and fluidly as we can. If we make mistakes, that's ok! If we accept our mistakes and keep going, we can still give a great answer! That's all for Speaking Question one. We hope you learned something!
