#VascularDisease #Atherosclerosis #PAD #RiskFactors #Exercise #Claudication #VascularHealth #Rehabilitation Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease affecting the whole circulatory system, leading to serious outcomes like heart attacks and strokes. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a common signpost for this issue and an independent risk factor for major cardiac events. Four major modifiable risk factors drive atherosclerosis: smoking, diabetes, dyslipidemia (blood fats), and hypertension (high blood pressure). Smoking is the single most important modifiable risk factor for PAD onset and worsening. Diabetes accelerates atherosclerosis significantly (200-400%) and increases risks for PAD and amputation. Dyslipidemia, particularly high LDL and triglycerides, fuels plaque formation. Hypertension constantly damages vessels and organs. Aggressive management of these risk factors through lifestyle changes and medication is critical. For PAD symptoms like claudication (leg pain with walking), structured exercise, especially walking, is a powerful tool, often showing better symptom improvement than medications or procedures. Peripheral Artery Disease Rehabilitation Programs (PRPs) are proven safe, beneficial, and cost-effective, significantly increasing walking distance (up to 179%) and supporting long-term lifestyle changes. Managing PAD involves addressing the systemic disease and its contributing factors.
