Satellite Travel Rig!

My typical satellite rig is an Icom IC-2730 mobile radio paired with a Elk Antenna log periodic antenna. Even though this is a fairly portable solution, the Elk Antenna is not a great option when you are flying and skipping checked baggage. In these cases I opt for a more "Low Drag" solution. In this video I am work a pass to verify this highly portable rig is working as expected before I head out on some holiday travels. The solution includes a HT radio w/whip antenna, a speaker mic, and a voice recorder. This is much easier to manage through airport security and cramped overhead compartments. However, this type of solution does pose some challenges from an operator's perspective. An HT typically has lower power than a mobile. A whip antenna provides no gain and they are omnidirectional. Meaning they will introduce omnidirectional noise and by their nature lack directionality when trying to pick up the Satellite downlink frequency. These contacts are always more difficult and more satisfying! I am choosing this Low Drag solution for a visit to PA where I hope to work several passes from FN01.
