THIS IS NADU, THE 'WAR CRY' OF THE KROBO Nadu is a ‘rallying cry’, ‘war whoop’ indigenous or native to Krobo, Manya Krobo to be precise. Nadu is not meant for recreation, festive or joyful periods except during the celebration of victory in a battle or war. It for sombre moments and occasions such as funerals of chiefs, warlords, and for battles. It serves as a morale booster and an invitation to take a communal action. You can describe it as a summon to engage in active hostilities in self-defense or a rebel cry to counter external aggression. Nadu possesses the charm to, when necessary, momentarily transform the most docile being into an ‘aggressor’. Not all the six traditional divisions or clans in Manya Krobo use or play nadu. Two of the clans, Suisi and Manya are relatively less combative; as such they shy away from acts of aggression that can potentially turn fatal. It is for this reason, among others, that the two (Manya and Suisi people) do not use colour red, not even when mourning the dead. The typical Manya or Suisi man will hardly clad himself in red, in fact it is considered a deviation when one does that. If you pay particular attention to the nadu rhythm, you will realize it is not as metrical and sluggish as klama - which has a flowing rhythm. The initial beat (prelude) is a bit friendly or rhythmical but when the drummers perk up, the beat graduates and turns ‘erratic’. The dance move is energy and corresponds with the beat, the gestures are war-like and involve mock combat actions. To put up an impressive nadu dance, one must have a great deal of energy and be remarkably agile because of the brisk steps and swift circular turns and gestures. The musical instruments comprise: ii. Bl3k3t3: A two-sided drum which produces a deep sound when struck ii. Oklema: A set of small, and cylindrical drums which produce a shrill or high-pitched voice sound when struck ii. Maaa (Bamboo/wooden clappers) - Bamboo Clappers are two pieces of bamboo half-section, which hare hit against each other to create a percussive sound like clap NB: Pay particular attention to the words of the song initiated by the 'Choir master' in the striped smock with the loin cloth around the waist. He says ... 'Taa pee ta, a hla nyumu )m3 n3 a ba' ! To wit ...'the battle has taken a different dimension, let's rally/call the men'. 'Kloli )m3 ju3, lol
