This is certainly one of Mendelssohn's best known and most loved works. Its final wedding march is one of the most familiar pieces of music ever written. Paul Paray (1886-1979) and the DSO give a great performance, and the engineering is excellent. Paul Paray along with Antal Dorati were Mercury Records go to conductors during these golden years for Mercury and their "Living Presence" albums. I do find it a bit ironic, however, that something known as "incidental music" is one of the standard pieces in every orchestra's repertoire.
