Wine Review: Taylors Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port 2005 - in the Emirates Lounge Auckland

While in the Emirates Lounge at Auckland Airport, waiting to board for the first leg of my flight to Europe, I found they were serving a pair of wonderful Taylors Vintage Ports. It was interesting to compare the wine to their full vintage Port from 2007, which I was also able to taste on the same occasion. Taylor Fladgate (usually referred to as "Taylor's") is one of the most important Port houses in the Douro region of northern Portugal. Taylor's is notable for its wide range of traditional ports, from vintage expressions to tawny ports of various ages, and also for its creation of the Late Bottled Vintage, or LBV, style. Taylor's was founded in 1692 by English merchant Job Bearsley who came to Oporto for general trade, but ended up founding a company that over 300 years later is still making and selling Ports. The company took the Name Taylors in 1838 when a parnership was formed between Joseph Taylor, John Fladegate and Morgan Yeatman, giving the company's full name Taylor, Fladgate and Yeatman. Today Taylor's are noted as leaders in sustainable viticulture in the Douro Valley and their sucess can be seen in the fact that their wines are available in over 100 countries around the world.
