I "calanchi" caratterizzano l'aspro paesaggio della Lucania sud-orientale, compreso fra le valli del Sauro, l'Agri ed il Basento. In questi punti del territorio è possibile notare dei solchi disposti in maniera parallela o a ventaglio, creatisi per effetto dell'erosione delle acque superficiali sui pendii argillosi, chiamati appunto Calanchi e descritti perfettamente nell'opera di Carlo Levi "Cristo si è fermato ad Eboli". Il territorio in questa zona risulta quindi brullo e ricco di argilla bianca, scosceso e caratterizzato da precipizi e valli scavate dall'erosione delle acque. The "calanchi" characterize the rugged landscape of south-eastern Lucania, between the valleys of the Sauro, the Agri and the Basento. In these points of the territory it is possible to notice furrows arranged in a parallel or fan-shaped manner, created by the erosion of surface waters on the clayey slopes, called Calanchi and perfectly described in the work of Carlo Levi "Christ stopped at Eboli" . The territory in this area is therefore barren and rich in white clay, steep and characterized by precipices and valleys carved out by water erosion.
