Bush had lunch with Chinese President Jiang Zemin at the Zhongnanhai Compound adjacent to the Forbidden City in Beijing on Friday. The US President was given a short introduction to the history of the Zhongnanhai Compound, which was once a former padi-field. The compound buildings date back to China's Qing Dynasty that reigned over China around 300 years ago. Earlier, Bush's limousine blew a tire bringing his motorcade to a halt as he travelled to lunch with Jiang. When the tire blew out, Bush had to walk to a backup armoured limousine, stalling the motorcade's progress for several minutes. He made the switch out of the view of journalists who travel with him.
