The Great Bell Chant Sung by Brother Pháp Niềm Read by Thích Nhất Hạnh Music by Gary Malkin Produced by Gary Malkin Michael Stillwater From The CD/book Graceful Passages: A Companion for Living and Dying Cover photograph by Matt Coldrick Vietnamese transcription / translation by: Lynn Vu Lynn was so kind to research the following two terms: Phổ Môn - translated as "The Dharma Gate". In Buddhism it is often used to refer to both the approach to and the understanding of Buddhist philosophy. It represents an open doorway for practitioners to explore and embrace the fundamental principles of Buddhism. In the context of Buddhism, "The Dharma Gate" is often seen as a symbolic concept, describing the beginning of a spiritual journey and the pursuit of knowledge about the Buddhist teachings. It symbolises the opportunity to receive and practice the fundamental principles, rules, and teachings of Buddhism. _ "Cam lộ" refers to a compassionate drop of water from the willow branch of Bodhisattva, bringing spring back to our dry earthly world. The dry Earth symbolises the world of suffering and delusion. The drop of compassionate water represents the cultivation of the Bodhisattva's mind of Compassion, symbolised by a water drop on the willow branch. Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara is described in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese cultures as holding a willow branch. The Bodhisattva dips the willow branch into the water of compassion in their heart, and wherever the water drips, there is rejuvenation. When the Bodhisattva sprinkles this Dharma Water on withered and dead branches, those branches come back to life and become green again. The dead branches symbolize suffering and delusion, while the green foliage represents the return to peace. With just a single drop of that water, Spring returns to the Great Earth.
