Don’t Pass Me By was written by Ringo Starr presumably sometime around 1963/1964. The song was mentioned in an interview the Beatles did on July 14, 1964. Paul was seemingly a fan of it and Ringo urged the band to record it. Ringo wrote it on piano playing only 3 chords as they were the only chords he knew. There is a clear country inspiration on the song and the final record kept that same country style. The song was ignored until 1968 during the White Album sessions. The song originally featured an orchestrated intro written and recorded by producer George Martin on July 22, 1968 during the sessions for Goodnight, also sung by Ringo. This original intro can be heard on the Beatles Anthology 3 titled “A Beginning”. It was put in the place of Now and Then after it was decided that the song would not be finished. The recording for the song began on June 5th, 1968. 3 takes we’re recorded with Ringo on piano and Paul on drums. Overdubbed were added to the 3rd take including a bass part by Paul, more piano and Ringo’s lead vocals. They did many different backing vocals that were soon scrapped. The next day, June 6th, Ringo replaced Paul’s previous bass with more lead vocals and Paul redid his bass part. Between 3pm and 6:40 pm on July 12, a violin part was recorded along with an additional bass part by Paul and another piano by Ringo. For this cover, I only demonstrated 1 piano part when there is in fact 3 pianos on the song but each piano part plays pretty much the same thing. The sound you hear on the piano is a Leslie cabinet set fast. To produce this sound, I used the Module app with the treble set down mixed with the Pianoteq app with the treble set slightly low. I added the Spin app which is a Leslie cabinet simulator and of course set it at fast. All of this is on IOS. Don’t Pass Me By was released on November 22, 1968 on the Beatles White Album.
