TERMINOLOGY TUESDAY 🌿 w/ the Florida Native Plant Society! In our last episode, we discussed how humans rely on the Ecosystem Services provided by functioning ecosystems. Our very existence and the necessities required for our everyday survival are provided by these services that we mostly take for granted. We generally categorize ecosystem services into four groups, last week we discussed Provisioning Services, and today we will describe another category; Cultural Services: Services that relate to the non-material world such as historical, recreational, spiritual, aesthetic, and cognitive benefits we derive from functioning ecosystems. These are often not easily quantifiable in monetary terms. Some examples of Cultural Services; Recreational Experiences: Recreation outdoors such as ecotourism and outdoor sports, as well as general outdoor recreation like hiking and botanizing. Spiritual: The importance of, and use of nature, for religious and spiritual experiences and purposes. Cultural and Historical: The inspirational and material benefits of nature to cultural heritage and traditions. Science and Education: The use of nature and natural systems to teach and learn about everything from mathematics, to evolution, to economic theory. Therapeutic: The cognitive benefits we derive from nature; real and quantifiable improvements to our mental and emotional heath by experiencing nature. This is by no means a comprehensive list of cultural services, but it is an overview to begin comprehending the ways we, as humans, depend on functioning ecosystems. Next week, we will continue reviewing the other categories of ecosystem services. The Florida Native Plant Society helps to advocate for and conserve Florida’s biodiversity, and we are currently fundraising for our Annual Campaign.
