While American Marines were required to shave and shower, the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) had a different rule: "Throw away the soap." Historical Context: Operating primarily in Phước Tuy Province between 1966 and 1971, the Australian SAS developed a jungle warfare doctrine that completely contradicted US General Westmoreland's "Search and Destroy" strategy. While US forces relied on helicopters and heavy artillery, Australian patrols from the Nui Dat base operated in small 5-man teams. Their discipline was absolute: they avoided Western soap, toothpaste, and cigarettes to eliminate "olfactory signatures" (smell). This unique approach to Counter-Insurgency (COIN) allowed them to ambush Viet Cong forces at point-blank range, earning them the enemy nickname "Ma Rung" (Phantoms of the Jungle). This video reveals the untold story of why these elite commandos voluntarily infected themselves with fungus and turned into "animals" to survive. While US troops were dying in ambushes because the enemy could smell their shaving cream, the Australians achieved a staggering kill ratio that remains legendary in military history. In this video, we cover: 💀 Why a bar of soap could kill an entire platoon in Phước Tuy. 💀 The brutal "No Washing" rule that shocked US Green Berets. 💀 US "Body Count" doctrine vs. Australian "Stealth" tactics. 💀 How the SASR achieved a 200:1 Kill/Death ratio. 💀 The "Ma Rung" psychological warfare that terrified the Viet Cong. The Pentagon tried to hide the true effectiveness of these "dirty" tactics to avoid embarrassment. Today, we open the classified files of the Australian SAS. ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video documents historical military strategies of the Vietnam War (1955–1975) and is intended for educational purposes only. #AustralianSAS #VietnamWar #MilitaryHistory #SASR #MaRung #PhuocTuy #History #USArmy
