This video shows the process of doing a pen and ink drawing on Ampersand Claybord. The drawing starts as a plein air drawing (drawing outdoors on location). (That part is not in this video, but I'm working on ways to do that for future videos). Drawing on location, I focused mainly on the overall composition. I just put in blocks of solid black and balanced those with blocks of white. I try to make a silhouette drawing that reads clearly. This silhouette drawing is taken back to the studio to finish. Even though the drawing was started on location, I allow myself artistic freedom to change things—to make things up. I try to keep just enough of the location drawing so that the viewer will understand that the image is of someplace or something in St. Louis. Also in this video, I point out something I call "jazz lines." That's when I improvise with the rendering of values with pen and ink—I let the pen kinda move and do its own thing. Any kind on lines can be used: straight, parallel, curved, thick and think, whatever feels right. The only rule is that the correct values have to be accurate. However, I do take some liberties with the editing of the videos. For instance, almost all my videos use time lapse to speed up the process. I would like to show an entire drawing in real time, but even my simplest drawings can take a full day--major drawings can take one to two weeks. No one wants to watch me draw for two weeks. Also, some of my edits are just for my own enjoyment. Video is a hobby for me, and I like to experiment. Note 2: I call my drawing medium scratchboard, and it is. However, a more accurate description of my technique would be "pen and ink on Ampersand Claybord. I work on white scratchboard (Claybord), and I draw with pen and ink the parts that have a value of 50 percent gray or less. For areas that are 50 percent gray or darker, I block in with solid black ink and scratch in white lines for detail. Note 3: I am showing how I work. However, although I have been an illustrator for over 40 years, there may be times when I am doing it wrong or not doing it in the best way. Materials I use: Ampersand Claybord, white, 1/8 inch thick; Micron pens; Higgins Black Magic ink or Koh-I-Noor ink; Scratch-Art knives.
