When people talk about executive functioning, they often think it's just about keeping homework organized. But it's so much more than that — and understanding the full picture is key to truly supporting students. Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that help students plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. These skills go far beyond color-coded planners and to-do lists. If you’ve looked up executive functioning before, you’ve probably come across terms like: Attending Working Memory Strategic Planning/Organization Initiation Inhibition Fluency Shifting Self-monitoring/Self-regulation But to provide meaningful support, we need to go a step further — organizing these skills into five key areas that can better guide intervention: ✅ Time Perception — Estimating how long tasks will take, noticing the passage of time, and visualizing time effectively. ✅ Self-Talk — Using an inner voice to plan, self-evaluate, and regulate behavior. ✅ Future Pacing — Visualizing goals, planning steps, and anticipating outcomes. ✅ Episodic Memory — Recalling mental images of past experiences to inform future planning and build self-confidence. ✅ Encoding — Creating mental images paired with words to better understand steps, strategies, and information. In this video, I explain these five key areas in more detail — and how they can help you plan more effective interventions for your students.
