Cannabis Sustainability Considerations Professor DeBacco Cannabis Cultivation is Emerging With the start of the increase in popularity to produce cannabis plants this is the time to ensure that it starts in the proper path. Growers need to be considering the sustainability of their practices no matter the size of their operation. Correcting Past Problems Seeing problems that have developed in other industries the goal should be that of prevention and overall sustainability. Many see cannabis as its own category (and in many ways it is), but considering large scale production sustainability is important. Must Think Big Picture Many growers come from a small (under 10 plant) growing perspective. However, growers need to consider scalability of their actions Would the same practices be possible with 10,000+ plants? Phosphorus… Prime Example Cannabis as many other plants do need phosphorus, however many growers over apply it…. Without realizing it. Phosphorus toxicity is not as obvious as nitrogen so many growers are unknowlingly over apply it with no (visual) negative impacts. However, phosphorus is becoming a limiting resource and is a fresh water contaminant. Do Not Waste a Limited Resource Cannabis growers needs to be aware of how much phosphorus their plants need (can uptake) and how much they are applying. Many are over applying and not realize the waste and potential negative impacts on the environment they could be having. Why We Need to Transform Phosphorus Use in the Global Food System Phosphorus = Food Growing Food Demand = Growing P Demand Finite Phosphate Geopolitical Risk Inefficient Global Food System Increased Fertilizer Costs No Guidelines/Regulations of Phosphorus Waste Disposal This includes all products that are required for plant production Some are disposable and short term used, others may be longer term use, but in the end they all must be disposed of in some way. Just consider where the products you purchase end up… Artificial Lighting Physical components This is the ballast, bulbs, cords and all other lighting equipment Electricity needs Link to Lecture Slides: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zaCd... *Due to the description character limit the full work cited for "Cannabis Sustainability Considerations" can be viewed at... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1I8TX...
