In 1912, Debussy went to an exhibition in Paris with his daughter, Chouchou, and was inspired by the illustrations to the fairy tale Undine by German author Friedrich de la Motte Fouquet (1777-1843). The water nymph's wayward movements are expressed by four motifs with different characteristics. After a ten-bar introduction, the sparkling and gentle motif (bars 11-13) appears, followed by the successively rising and falling motif (bars 16-17) and the motif (bars 18-19) with bouncing arpeggios. In the middle of the piece, the repeated motif (bars 30-31) appears, and develops while sandwiching the previously appeared motifs. The piece ends with a return to motif of the beginning, quietly closing as if to depict the water nymph disappearing into the water. #piano #pianorecital #debussy #yamahapiano
