Sydney experiences one of its hottest days of the year with temperatures reaching 37 degrees in the city and up to 39.8 degrees in some suburbs during October. A total fire ban is in effect across Greater Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra regions due to extreme fire danger conditions caused by hot north-westerly winds.
