In recent years we've learned that the stars are not just points of light, but planetary systems in their own right. There are many billions of Earth-like planets just in our own galaxy, and our galaxy is just one of hundreds of billions. Could we really be the only inhabitants of this vast universe? The search for life beyond Earth is a rapidly-growing field. Robots are sniffing the Martian soil; JWST is scanning the atmospheres of exoplanets. These "biosignature" searches are challenging, and currently can only probe a handful of targets. But recent years have also seen a rapid growth in the search for smart life. Looking for technosignatures (signs of technology as a proxy for the intelligence that built it), astronomers are harnessing the resources of our largest telescopes, most powerful computers, and most cutting-edge AI algorithms.
