Butterfly Stories – What scientists have learnt about the world’s favourite insect Dr.Nitin is a broadly trained naturalist interested in evolution, ecology and genomics. His introduction to biology began as a school student, with his keen interest in observing and photographing insects in his backyard. This led to further develop his interest in natural history. He went on in the later years to get his PhD under Prof Carol Boggs at the University of South Carolina, where he studied the genetics of butterfly-host plant interactions. He is today a post-doctoral research associate with Prof. Brandon S Cooper at the University of Montana. Dr,Nitin’s work on Indian butterflies has taken him to almost all parts of India. This includes, neighboring places like the Western Ghats and Kerala as well as remote locations in the Northeastern states, Western Himalayas and even Andaman & Nicobar Islands. His journey has been marked with several achievements. • He has authored a much acclaimed research paper titled, “The Larval Host Plants of Butterflies of the Western Ghats” • He ( along with Mr.Ashok Sengupta, Haneesh KM and Rohit Girotra) co-founded the Bangalore Butterfly Club, a citizen science initiative, to promote the awareness about butterflies as well the study and scientific documentation of Butterflies in Karnataka. • He (along with Dr. Krushnamegh Kunte) has co-authored the book – Butterflies of Bengaluru as well as a brochure on the Butterflies of Bengaluru. Dr.Nitin is an encyclopedia of knowledge and over the last several years, he has selflessly and passionately shared his knowledge with his fellow colleagues, other scientists and public at large. His ability to communicate complex topics in an easy to understand language and his patient approach to help another person learn, make him a pleasure to listen to. And many have benefitted from his sharing.
