He is internationally celebrated for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the revolutionary concepts of microcredit and microfinance, which have empowered millions of underprivileged people, especially women, to escape poverty. Born on 28 June 1940 in the village of Bathua, near Kaptai Road in Hathazari, Chittagong, during the British Raj, Dr. Yunus grew up in a Bengali Muslim family. His father, Hazi Dula Mia Shoudagar, was a jeweler, and his mother, Sufia Khatun, was a homemaker. His early years were spent in the village, which played a formative role in shaping his future vision for social change.
