Trichomoniasis: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments and prevention - STI/STD Trichomoniasis, also called trich, is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. Epidemiology of Trichomoniasis. • Most common non-viral STD worldwide. • Usually transient and self-limited in male partners. • Infection is more common in women than in men - older black women are more likely. • The incubation period is thought to be 4–28 days. How is Trichomoniasis spread? • Unprotected sexual intercourse. Signs & Symptoms of Trichomoniasis. Symptoms in women include; • Purulent, malodorous fishy smell, thin vaginal discharge. • Burning or painful urination. • Itching, burning, redness or soreness of the genitals. • Postcoital bleeding. • Erythema of the vulva and vaginal mucosa. • Strawberry cervix. Symptoms in men include; • Infection is more often asymptomatic. • White discharge from the penis. • Burning or painful urination. • Superficial penile ulcerations at the prepuce. • Prostatitis. Treatment for Trichomoniasis. • Metronidazole is the drug of choice. • Orally either in a single 2g dose or in a dose of 250mg Metronidazole three times daily for 7 days. • The drug produces a cure rate of 95%. • Treatment of both sexual partners is recommended. If a patient is not responding normal dose; • The dosage may be increased. • For Metronidazole-resistant T. vaginalis strains Tinidazole is used. • Metronidazole IS mutagenic – It is not recommended for use during pregnancy. • Clotrimazole How does trichomoniasis (trich) affect pregnancy? • Pregnant people with trich are more likely to have their babies early. • Their babies are more likely to have a low birth weight.
