Here Are 4 communication exercises for you and your significant other to practice: 1. Active Listening Many communication exercises for couples involves active listening. When we engage in conversation with our partner, there are many factors that can interfere with our ability to pay close attention to them. There are so many distractions that can drift our attention away and onto something else. Active listening lessens the opportunity for distraction and increases communication. For the person who is listening, active listening will aid you in developing a deeper understanding of what your partner is saying. It is a way to pay attention to their ideas, thoughts, and feelings so you can comprehend more effectively. Like many relationship skills, active listening requires practice in order to master this technique. The more we do it, the easier it becomes. Example of Active Listening: "It is my understanding you are mad at me for talking to you in a disrespectful tone. Is that correct?" 2. Expressing Emotions (importance of expressing your emotions) Being able to express your emotions effectively are common communication exercises for couples. No Put-Downs It is important to not insult, put-down, or disrespect your partner when having an argument or conflict. When we put each other down, it increases defenses in the other person that cause the conflate to last longer and get more intense. Why is this? Because your other half feels hurt, which manifests in anger. And when anger is at the forefront of the conflict, it is extremely difficult to resolve it.
