Built as a self-sufficient doomsday shelter, the Beckham Creek Cave house later served as a nightclub (with helipad!). Beckham Creek Cave has undergone several transformations since its inception in the 1980s. It’s now waiting for a new owner who’s willing to write the next chapter. Currently listed for $2.75 million, the unique estate carved into the side of a slab of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas has an intriguing backstory. “The Beckham Creek Cave Lodge was voted in the top 10 most unique places to stay in the world, right up there next to the underwater ocean laboratory that had been converted into a lodge. The only way you can reach that one is to scuba dive down to it,” says listing agent Rayne Davidson. Celestial Tea co-founder John Hay purchased the cave in 1983. As the threat of nuclear war between the USSR and the USA loomed, Hay believed the cave would make a perfect doomsday shelter. Though actively used as shelters and exploration spots since the early 1800s, the caves of the Ozarks—and this one in particular—were left largely unchanged. That is, until Hay purchased Beckham Creek Cave. According to a 1988 article in People, Hay purchased a 240-acre spread, including the cave, for $146,000 in 1983. He then spent $2 million converting the cave into a full-on fallout shelter. The result was a blast-proof haven with its own hydroelectric power and source of spring water thanks to a naturally formed waterfall in the dwelling. Not long after construction was completed, the tension between the USSR and the United States eased, and Hay realized (with a little help from his wife) a bomb shelter wasn’t a necessary addition to his property portfolio. Hay sold the property to a man known only as “Mr. Richardson” in 1987, according to Davidson. Mr. Richardson converted the bomb shelter into a nightclub and added a helipad for VIP guests. “There’s always been this legend that famous Hollywood movie stars such as Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor came to the opening night of the nightclub way back in its early days,” said Davidson. One partygoer later confirmed to Davidson that the stars were present for the celebration. Updated in 2007 and then again in 2014, this 5,800-square-foot cave home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. All the rooms in the home are rich in natural rock formations as most of the cave itself was preserved during all phases of construction and remodeling. Though it is a cave, the dwelling boasts high ceilings and large, open spaces, which lend to a roomy interior. The property also includes a maintenance barn and horse stables with an apartment. Popular Little Buffalo River and all its amenities are just a short drive away.
