Guys have been telling me for a long time that I need to try this so finally I did. My cousin and I rented couple of machines and had a go at it. These bikes were 2009 YZ450F’s. They had 2016 Timbersled kits on them. I think they were the ST 120 kits, but I could be wrong. The bikes ran fine, but I will tell you that I had to ride that motor harder than I’ve ever ridden any dirt bike motor. I would be at full throttle for minutes at at time, something that never happens on a dirt bike when riding the dirt. I spent most of the time in 2nd and 3rd gear. Occasionally, I got into 4th gear, but that was rare. Power is a premium on these bikes and you can never get enough while turning that bike track! If I were to do this again, or install a snow bike kit on a bike of my own, I’d make sure to use a bike that has electric start. Kicking your bike at 9000 feet while wearing snow gear isn’t any fun. You have to balance the bike on the snow while you kick it. It would make things a lot easier if you could hit the e start button with the bike leaned over to you and then just hit the gas and go. I’d also like to try it on a 300 two stroke. Some of the guys I’ve ridden with have said they prefer the 300’s for these snow bikes. I guess it may come down to rider preference. I had a good time though. It was better than any of the days I have spent on a snowmobile, and I would like to do it again with more snow on the ground. Having said that, I’d like to find a bike to rent again because I’m not running out to buy my own Timbersled kit or Yeti kit just yet. Special thanks to my $10/month patrons!
